I haven’t traveled much in the south, so this was one of the first times that I had been on the ground in a place where slavery was practiced. And not just practiced, New Orleans was a huge hub for the slave trade. Armstrong Park is a place where slaves would gather on Sundays. They were given the day “off,” so they would gather here in this square to dance, sing, practice their native religion, participate in open-air markets, and drum. It is said that these drumming celebrations were major contributors to the development of jazz. Even though it was empty when we walked through, you could still feel the energy and meaning of the place. #visitneworleans #louisiana #travelblogger #history #travelblog We stayed at the quaint and historic @hotelprovincial on our weekend away in #neworleans . My friend @elena.wells.1 recommended it and we were not disappointed. Its adorable courtyards, fountains, and vine covered brick walls made for a very picturesque property but it is the location that cannot be beat. It is walking distance to all the best spots in the #frenchquarter so you don’t even need to rent a car during your stay. The staff were pleasant and helpful, and we took full advantage of the restaurant French Toast , and the hotel bar, the Ice Bar, during our stay. It’s a #historichotel so be prepared for thin walls (which is its own sort of entertainment), and, rumor has it, it might be also haunted. But what property isn’t in #nola We had a great stay here and would definitely recommend it! #neworleanshotel #travelblog One of the things I wanted to learn more about in New Orleans was what is the deal with all these above ground graves? Intrigued by the ghastly idea of corpses floating up from their graves due to the high water table, I booked a tour to figure out what was really going on, like a real nerd. This quick 1 hour tour was the perfect chance to get an appetizer portion of history. We toured #stlouiscemetery1 and got to see the graves of Homer Plessy, of Plessy v Ferguson, Marie Laveau, a free woman of color who was an incredible leader known as “the Priestess of Voudou” and of course, Nicholas Cage’s ridiculous pyramid tomb. Have you ever been to a forest after a fire? Apparently, it’s not a safe place to walk around, on account of the roots potentially turning to ash and the trees being all dead and possibly falling on you. So we didn’t stay long, and we kept our distance, but it was a very spooky, surreal experience. The day was windy and black strips of bark were hanging off the tree or blowing off from the wind. The burnt wood contrasted with the bright exposed wood underneath, creating an otherworldly landscape. Anyways, it was beautiful and thought-provoking. Go outside every day. That’s all. If you visit #nola and are in the mood for #friedchicken you gotta check out @williemaesnola We had two Uber drivers recommend it, so you know it’s good. No fuss, no muss, just crispy battered chicken from a James Beard award winner. It was DELICIOUS, and worth the short trek outside of the French Quarter. #yum The view from our hike in #johnstoncanyon #banffnationalpark #banff #theinkpots #johnstoncanyoninkpots And now a moment for #thegardendistrict of #neworleans We spent part of an afternoon just wandering through the neighborhood marveling at the beautiful mansions and homes. The sprawling oak trees, iron fences, and variety of architectural styles made every house look so beautiful!
